Announcing the 2017 Irma Black Finalists!

February 15, 2017

We are very pleased to announce the 2017 Irma Simonton Black Award finalists as picked by our School for Children third and fourth-graders from sixteen semifinalists.  The finalists are:

written and illustrated by Liz Wong

(Knopf Books for Young Readers)

Little Red and the Very Hungry Lion

written and illustrated by Alex T. Smith

(Scholastic Press)

The Night Gardener

written and illustrated by the Fan Brothers

(Simon and Schuster)

A Hungry Lion or a Dwindling Assortment of Animals

written and illustrated by Lucy Ruth Cummins

(Atheneum Books for Young Readers)

The students spent a month–one week with rotating sets of four books–working with their teacher to vote for their favorite book each week, then met with children’s librarian Allie Bruce to discuss the eight books with the most votes and choose the finalists.

Registration is now open for any first or second-grade class that would like to join with classrooms around the country (and the world) to choose our Award winner.  Congratulations to all our finalists!
